All About Fiber Beds and Featherbeds

6/19/2017

  • At least 35% of fiber bed owners ask whether the bed becomes lumpy or deteriorates when machine washed and dried.
  • Many people ask if dry cleaning provides better results.
  • 20% of fiber bed shoppers also asked if the beds produce occasional shaking when used for a time. They also asked if fiber beds regularly shake – is fluffing needed to maintain comfort and loft.
  • 40% of shoppers compared other types of toppers, such as latex and memory foam. They asked whether fiber toppers give the bed an uneven and lumpy appearance.
  • The majority of fiber bed shoppers asked about durability. Will the bed flatten or compress with regular use, making it lose some comfort?

What is A Fiber Bed?

Fiber beds are commonly affordable, efficient, and softening mattresses that lessen the pressure points when sleeping. They do not have an odor or allergy-causing effects. Fiber beds may be too lumpy and thin for some because they provide little support. Shaking or fluffing is necessary to maintain loft and comfort. It is not safe to machine wash and dry them since it may cause damage. A fiber bed is typically stuffed with polyester fiber or puffball. It is not an actual mattress or bed, but rather a thick mattress topper or mattress pad.

What is a Featherbed?

Featherbeds are mattress toppers and useful at softening a stiff mattress. They cost less and provide a cooling effect when sleeping in than the average mattress topper. A featherbed is not a real mattress or bed but a mattress topper. It is mostly filled entirely with feathers from the wings of ducks and geese. Featherbeds have no ability to prevent motion transfer – Buying an excessively expensive featherbed may not provide you with adequate comfort as the concept of creation is more or less the same across feather bed brands. Notably – Featherbeds do not sleep hot or trap heat.

What's the Difference Between a Fiber and Feather Bed?

  • Fiber beds prices range from $35 to $130. Buyers spend on average about $51 while featherbeds range from $50 to $150 with customers paying an average of $85.
  • Fiber beds compress or flatten as they age, losing some comfort. Featherbeds offer a stable value.
  • About 20% of fiber bed owners report their fiber bed helps to reduce back pains while featherbed owners complain of feathers poking through the cover causing pain and discomfort.
  • Fiber beds improve mattress support while feather beds provide limited body support requiring regular fluffing and shaking.
  • Fiber beds mattresses produce lumpiness and clumping of the interior contents –due to machine washing – while featherbeds clumping and lumpiness of the feathers is caused by overuse requiring regular shaking and fluffing.
  • Fiber beds offer little resistance to movement, making them better than other foam mattresses. Featherbeds tend to provide resistance to changes getting up off the bed.
  • The fiber bed topper causes sex to be extra comfortable without a dipping bounce. Featherbeds are also adaptive to sexual activity except for the sporadic poking feathers.
  • The weight of full fiber beds weights about 9+ lbs while queen featherbeds weigh 10-18 lbs which is the average mattress weight.
